OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWe are 3 retired rock climbing women who have lived in Mexico for about 7 years and witnessed the horrible conditions of the dogs of El Potrero Chico. Not because the people did not care but it was because they had no money or access to vet supplies and services. In 2011, we decided to change that when we found a dog chained to a tree and almost starved to death. After we rescued her and surrounded her with love and care, her little heart gave out. Losing Fiona, her new name, was devastating for all of us and we were determined to change things.

In April 2013, our dream became a reality. Fiona Animal Refuge opened its doors with 19 kennels, office and surgery. To see this beautiful facility really happen and the town embrace our vision is a miracle.  FAR is a 501(c)(3) public charity which means all donations are tax deductible.

The Fiona Animal Shelter supports the idea that the source of abuse, abandonment, mistreatment and cruelty, which most animals are victims of in Mexico, is that the people are not taught how to care for their animals and they do not have access to the resources such as veterinarian services and basic animal care products.  These facts drive us  to reach out to the community for their help.  In exchange, we provide free spay and neuter, vaccinations, flea and tick medication and when necessary, food and shelter. To continue our vision,  we need the support of the people of Mexico and the U.S.

In September 2013, we appeared in Animal Wellness Magazine and have support from OutdoorPlay Sports Company, Rock and Ice Magazine, BarkBox, and Solid Rock Climbers For Christ. All of this because of a dog chained to a tree named Fiona. In her memory, we will make a difference in Mexico.
